Assac Networks and Gilat Telecom have signed a cooperation agreement for the supply of ShieldiT – an integrated, all-in-one smartphone security solution, that enables secured, managed communication over a satellite connection

27 June 2022, Tel-Aviv, Assac Networks – a company specializing in cyber solutions for the complete protection of mobile devices for government agencies, defense and commercial organizations, which recently completed an investment round led by ASPIS Cyber Technologies, Inc., with ICARO as its marketing partner – has signed a cooperation agreement with Gilat Telecom’s Government Division. The two companies will provide a complete protection solution for mobile devices, in all types of communication – satellite, Wi-Fi and cellular, in a new combined solution that adds a controlled layer of secure communication over existing infrastructure.

Military, security and strategic organizations are typically engaged in sensitive communications involving confidential data which must be protected. However, their personnel’s Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) smartphones rely on public and private networks that are easily hackable; they may be operating in an area where there is no GSM reception, or a risk of GSM jamming; or there may be low bandwidth or lack of data connection – all of which put critical communications with headquarters and other team-members at risk. In such cases, a redundant and available means of secure communication is required.

The new ShieldiT with satellite capability provides secure mobile communication in mission-critical activities that involve the exchange of sensitive, and confidential information – such as between government agencies and remote operations at strategic sites in rural areas – even where the only available communication is via satellite.

“Assac Networks’ ShieldiT is the only solution with a unified, managed anti-hacking and anti-tapping capability for Bring-Your-Own-Device smartphones, which fully integrates with existing voice and IT systems,” says Shimon Zigdon, CEO of Assac Networks. “ The company has decades of experience in providing smartphone security and mobile communication encryption solutions that are tailor made to meet the strictest security requirements and operational needs of any government agency or other strategically-important unit. With this new cooperation agreement with Gilat Telecom, we are proud to now enhance both companies’ offerings and provide our customers with integrated, all-in-one smartphone security, with a unique satellite connection capability.”

“We are delighted with our collaboration with Assac Networks, which expands Gilat’s offering,” says Ami Schneider, VP Government Solutions Division of Gilat Telecom. “As a company that has been operating in the security and homeland defense market for decades, we identified the need for full protection of mobile devices for satellite communications users, whether to support a mission, or in remote areas. This integrated solution addresses this need, and we have already seen a great deal of interest in it from our customers.”

ShieldiT works on BYOD smartphones, whether iOS and Android, and offers three layers of security: (a) threat management – robust and AI-powered, with a user-friendly dashboard; (b) anti-hacking – for detection and prevention of cyberattacks, data theft and malware; and (c) anti-tapping – point-to-point, military-grade voice and text message encryption and eavesdropping prevention. All ShieldiT features are controlled centrally via the unified ManageiT management dashboard, enabling incident response to be conducted from the management console. The integration of ShieldiT with a satellite modem empowers its users to have on-demand communications for tactical networks on the move, in a solution that is easily integrated on vehicles, naval vessels, and aircraft, and offers high-performance tracking.

COVID-19 Remote Work Threatens Smartphones and Enterprise IT Security

COVID-19 Remote Work Threatens Smartphones and Enterprise IT Security

According to a new report released by Check Point, the attack surface stemming from the increased use of mobile devices to access corporate systems has grown substantially.

“In 2020 we saw the attack surface continuously expanding, with 97% of organizations facing mobile threats that originated in multiple vectors including applications, networks, devices, and OS vulnerabilities,” says the report, which was published after polling nearly 1800 organizations. The researched found that almost every organization in the research sample experienced at least one mobile malware attack in 2020.

Mobile Device Manager (MDM) – a single point of weakness
Another vulnerability reviewed by the report is enterprises’ MDM – Mobile Device Managers. MDMs provide enterprises with central control over their mobile network, but this makes them a single security weakness point, as any malware which infiltrates them can easily spread and infect every device connected to them. And once the malware makes its way into the MDM and the entire network, it can be used by hackers to steal credentials, access corporate e-mails as well as infect the entire IT network, with all the obvious dire implications.

Flubot malware impacting Android devices with phishing attacks
Another report which further emphasizes why securing the enterprise mobile network against hacking and tapping is crucial, was also recently published, this time by Zimperium. The report describes the dangers posed by the Flubot malware, which impacts mainly Android devices by employing SMS phishing techniques to lure its victims to click a link to “track a package” from a reputable courier company.

According to the report, once the user clicks the link, the smartphone’s browser is directed to a malicious website, enabling Flubot to steal 2-factor authentication credentials, monitor other applications installed on the device, collect credit card information via a fake Google Play credit card, as well as carry out a wide variety of other malicious activities.

ShieldiT users are protected against Flubot as well as other smartphone malware, thanks to Assac Networks’ Mobile Threat Defense machine learning engine. ShieldiT also secures against man-in-the-middle mobile communication eavesdropping attacks with its military-grade encryption that makes it impossible for hackers to intercept and tap mobile conversations. Assac Networks’ ShieldiT app is the only solution on the market today which provides this type of 360° protection against both hacking & tapping.

A Gartner report once again emphasizes the importance of protecting smarthphones against hacking and tapping

A Gartner report once again emphasizes the importance of protecting smarthphones against hacking and tapping

A recently-published Gartner report highlights the importance for enterprises to address the cybersecurity threats stemming from smartphones and recommends that enterprises employ mobile threat defense (MTD) tools to protect their employees’ smartphones against malware which can jeopardize vital organizational data and IT infrastructure.

The report emphasizes that:
“Organizations that should plan to adopt MTD solutions sooner rather than later are:
– Those in high-security sectors.
– Those with large and fragmented Android device fleets (although we must point out that Google has recently made major improvements to the security and consistency of Android devices28,29,30).
– Those in regulated sectors such as finance and healthcare” (Gartner)

The report also provides a number of reported incidences in which smartphones were jeopardized by malicious apps:
New Wroba Campaign Is Latest Sign of Growing Mobile Threats, Dark Reading.
Fakespy Masquerades as Postal Service Apps Around the World, IT Security Guru.
SourMint: Malicious Code, Ad Fraud, and Data Leak in iOS, snyk.
Malicious Optimizers Hosted on Google Play Amassed 470,000 Downloads, Security Week.
And others.

Assac Networks’ ShieldiT app is a holistic 360° smartphone security solution that provides the most comprehensive protection against the threats listed by the Gartner report, including protection from malicious apps (“time bombs”, self-modifying apps), spear phishing attacks (malicious URLs, PDF files, etc.), network traffic redirection attacks (“man-in-the-middle” attacks), SSL stripping techniques, rogue WiFi access points, rogue base station/femtocell attacks and more. In addition to its anti-hacking technology, ShieldiT is the first and only app to also provide anti-tapping protection by utilizing MIL-STD encryption, safeguarding users from any attempt to intercept mobile communication and tap their conversations.

Mitigating US Smartphone Threats in the New Normal

Mitigating US Smartphone Threats in the New Normal

Smartphone hackers haven’t taken time off during the COVID-19 pandemic. If anything, they’ve gotten smarter. Ransomware attacks were up 485% worldwide last year. Whether it be ransomware, malware, or phishing, smartphones have increasingly become a target for cybercriminals.

According to Bitdefender’s 2020 Consumer Threat Landscape Report, Americans received the lion’s share of unsolicited spam emails in 2020—a whopping 38 percent of global spam. According to the recently published report, scammers are targeting Americans with spam containing phony COVID-19 stimulus payments, leveraging the economic uncertainty caused by mass layoffs in the US. They are using fear and misinformation to get access via phishing texts, emails, and the like. Android devices in particular are vulnerable to malware and malicious apps, with fake Zoom meeting links, etc.

Surprisingly, a malicious text message is all that’s needed for a hacker to covertly install malware on a smartphone and take control of any app installed on that device. People would be very surprised by how easy it is for hackers to hack their phones, install malware on them and do all sorts of damage like steal data, track keylogging of bank passwords, eavesdrop on their conversations, etc.

Smartphones hold our most precious information and valuables; and as such, they constitute an entryway, or a safe key, to bank accounts, or even virtual valuables in the form of crypto coins. That’s why it’s crucial to protect them with the most advanced technology out there, much like we protect our homes and cars with sophisticated intrusion protection and alarm systems.

Smartphones require the highest level of protection from both hacking and tapping; something that continuously scans the device, detects, in real-time, whenever malware is installed on it, and prevents hackers from gaining control of smartphones and their installed apps.

Assac Networks’ ShieldiT and its management console ManageiT, are the most effective means of mitigating any kind of cyber threat which can compromise valuable information stored on a smartphone. Contact us for more information.
